Recently Kiera was chosen to be the Instrumental Music Sterling Scholar from the high school. We consider this to be a great honor for her, and are so proud of her accomplishments.
Her main instrument, the horn, is considered to be one of the hardest to play.
I remember when she was in 6th grade and decided that she wanted to play the horn.
She would come home every day lugging her instrument off the bus.
She would take it and start to practice and would get so frustrated that she would cry.
Every. Single. Day.
I felt guilty because I thought that maybe I'd pressured her into choosing it
(I just love the sound of a horn),
but when I told her that it would be okay if she wanted to switch to something else, she insisted that NO, she wanted to play the horn.
I'm so glad that she is so stubborn and stuck with it.
I few weeks ago when the choir and madrigals were getting ready for the foundations concert that they do every year with a rival school, Kiera mentioned that one of the songs had a horn solo in it.
She really wanted to play it, but the guest conductor had told the high school conductors that he had never heard a high school horn player good enough to tackle a solo as difficult as this one. He had decided that maybe they'd have a string ensemble do it.
Did I mention that Kiera is stubborn? Not only that, though. I guess so is our high school choir director. He really fought for Kiera and told the guest conductor to at least give her a chance.
He did.
And, to quote the conductor, he was very impressed with Kiera, and used the word amazed at one point.
So, she was able to play the solo horn part at the foundations concert.
We couldn't be prouder!
Oh, she also did a bit of singing too, of course.
